New features coming your way…

Dear all,

Just to provide you with some insight to what we are getting up to this week. As well as carrying out a thorough update of our press directories we are also writing two exciting features for the Autumn issue of Arts Media Contacts, due out mid-September. I am writing an informative piece on British art competitions and prizes and my colleague is writing an entertaining review of the reviewers in the national newspapers. Both features will be available to view from our home page at a later date.

Site developments!

Dear all,

We have recently been working alongside our technical team to revamp the Press Release Design Suite on the online Arts Media Contacts system.

The purpose of the update was to make this section as user-friendly as possible. After taking in subscribers’ comments and feedback we decided to go for a much cleaner and simpler format. Each step on the upgraded Press Release Design Suite is easy to follow and the editing box has a new straight-forward tool bar. We have also made it easy to align your logo and image to whichever position you choose in order to ensure the best possible presentation for your press releases.

If you require any assistance with the new press release design software please get in touch and we can guide you through it. As always, feel free to offer your comments and suggestions, we will be sure to keep these in mind for future site development projects.

Best regards,

Advertise Your London Exhibitions For Free

As part of my research for a recent PR campaign here at Artsinform, I looked into how London art galleries can advertise their exhibitions for free on the web. The results of my analysis are beneficial, in terms of offering you some free information and guidance, but they are also of use to us as we can refer to the information again for our clients. A recent hot topic for discussion has been free online marketing methods that help to establish an online presence, including, social media, blogs, video etc. We now need to investigate what is readily available online, in terms of places where event information can be uploaded and advertised for free. For the purpose of this article, I have focused on London listings, but there are many free submission sites up and down the country, so ensure you get the most out of them today, if you are not taking advantage of such platforms already.

I will start by providing some insight into how to approach the larger and well-known London listing websites. AllinLondon, the events listings website for those who live in London, has a detailed ‘What’s on’ section where you can add your exhibition information for free. AllinLondon is a good starting place as the website attracts a staggering 1,000,000 users per month.

To add a listing, simply, click on ‘Add an Event’, and then ‘General Events’. Fill in the form, add an image to boost your ad, and click on ‘Add this Event’ and it will send (www.allinlondon.co.uk/add_whatson.php). Information can be sent as far in advance/close to the event date as you wish.

Artshole is another London-based website that allows you to list exhibition details for free. In the form of an online gallery, the site is very attractive and currently has 300,000 hits per month. There is an extensive ‘What’s on’ section covering exhibitions in London. Visit this section, click on ‘Submit Your Exhibition Now’ and complete the form (http://www.artshole.co.uk/submit_now/)- as easy as one, two, three.

Also, specifically listing London events is London Diary Online. Scroll down the home page to ‘Up coming events’ and click on ‘What’s on news and updates’. On the right you can click on ‘New Topic’ and fill in the form. Please bear in mind that only paid-for listings have guaranteed inclusion on this website. All information goes through their editor, Michael Wint, first.

London is Free has free exhibition listings. Click on ‘Exhibitions’ on the left-hand side then ‘Add your event’. There are also numerous other free listing websites, which are not specifically London-based but have sections on London events. ArtRabbit, a new entry in this issue of the directory, is a great example. An online tool for anyone interested in the UK’s vibrant art scene, ArtRabbit serves exhaustive listings of contemporary art events throughout the UK. You can join for free and add events you know about, then read and discuss what other people thought. To do this, click on ‘Events’. Then click on your area (London) then select your gallery. If your gallery is not listed then there is a button to click to add it. Then create your own.

There are many other free submission sites where you can advertise your London exhibition details. Aesthetica, for example, allows you to add events on their listings page. Click on ‘What’s on’ then go to ‘Add new event’ (underneath to the right-hand side) Fill in the form for a free listing. Your entry can be up to 100 characters. It will be put up once moderators have checked it.

Britisharts.co.uk is another option. It lists all information relating to the arts in Britain, from galleries, venues and founders, to artists and publishers. In order to advertise your event you need to add a reciprocal link to your website, which is easy and worthwhile.

Artslant and Artsphere are other examples. Artslant describes itself as ‘The inside spot for art buzz and events.’ Like many of the free listing websites you have to register for free before you can upload any information. Once you have done this, put the cursor over ‘Add content’ on the right-hand side of the choice bar. Click on ‘Add your exhibit’. You will then have to log-in with the details you set up when you first registered.

Artsphere, an online creative arts network, provides an arts news service. Since 2006 they have developed and nurtured a constantly growing base of members with expertise throughout the creative arts. The Events Diary section keeps you up to date with the UK Creative Arts Scene.Similar to most of the other free listing websites discussed, Artsphere requires that you sign up as a member with them first. Then there are two options for getting your details published on their site:

1.Create your own blog (at http://artsphere.co.uk/yourblog/) and post your news up. Don’t forget to tell everyone about your artsphere blog too. Site-wide blog posts are featured on the home page and elsewhere on the site, so visitors can spot your blog post before they even get there. They recommend this method for all standard news items, and general blogging.

2. Add your press release or news item via the news desk form. You need to include an image to accompany your press release. They will then review your item and post it to the main blog. They recommend this method for more significant news stories and press releases.

I have mentioned all the best free submission websites that I have come across in my research. Start advertising your event for free on some of these sites, if not all, to get more promotion for your exhibitions. Remember, advertising your exhibition details on your website is a great place to start.

Increase online awareness of your artwork through video

Hi all,

This week I have been researching how video can be used to promote artwork. Here is a sneak preview of what I found.

Video marketing is very much ‘on trend’. It is similar to blogging, but you get to see what something looks like and have a face to identify it with, hence making it a more powerful medium of exposure. Video can be a great option to showcase your gallery and artwork in an effective and interactive way. There are a fair few options when it comes to promoting exhibitions, many of which are low-cost, or completely free, and video falls in to this category.

Artists, art galleries and creative professionals are using video in a variety of ways to present themselves to the public. The video can showcase the artist’s work, an opening event at the gallery, or a clip from the studio. Methods of video art include:

• Slideshows- photos, a voice-over or music, and a video-editing program
• Interviews- speaking about your passion
• Behind-the-scenes- information viewers can not get elsewhere
• How-to videos- step-by-step information on how to do something
• Reviews- testimonials to highlight your credibility

There are a variety of online video sites including: Youtube, Aol Video and Google Video to list but a few. There are well-established organisations such as Saatchi gallery who have taken full advantage of this alternative online marketing method, as well as big name artists such as Damien Hirst. Lesser-known artists have also started to employ video marketing to increase awareness of their work.

The full version of this article will appear in the May issue of the arts media contacts directory. Not to be missed!

Best wishes,

Emma

Latest from the Arts Blogosphere

Hi everyone,

I am very excited to come across a list of award-winning arts and cultural blogs, entitled, the ‘Top 25 UK Arts & Culture Blogs’ by the Creative Tourist, Manchester’s guide for tourists with a creative spark. The list was compiled on the level of popularity, based on Yahoo inlinks, Bloglines citations and the number of Google readers a blog has. I have whittled down the list of the best ones for artists and arts PR professionals, in terms of promoting exhibitions and events.

Other than the predictable entries for the blogs of the big publications, such as the Guardian, Telegraph and Saatchi, the list includes the notoriable, We Make Money Not Art, a blog already listed in the arts media contacts press directory, covering art openings and cultural events with a focus on the intersection between art and social issues. Also high up on the list is Making a Mark, having a prominent entry in AMC for a year or so now, this is a very plausible blog and well-worth a read. Katherine Tyrrell, founder, reviews major exhibitions in London and notable artists, and is particularly interested in receiving information about art exhibitions. Send her details of your forthcoming events for a mention in the blog so your details are shared with thousands of art bloggers and arts-minded people alike.

There are also some blogs that we haven’t come across before, such as, Feeling Listless, a culture blog based in Liverpool, covering arts and museums, and Art Sleuth, which features writing about galleries, launches and artists, predominately in London. We are in the process of adding this one now. We have recently added the blog View from the South Bank (the south bank of the river Clyde in Glasgow), which comes in at number 24 on the list. This is written by Pauline McLean, BBC Scotland’s arts correspondent, and covers arts events (both visual and performing) up and down the country. We are surprised that the original It’s Nice That did not get a mention on the list, showcasing the finest work from across the creative industry and discovering new talent from around the world.

Do let us know if there are any impressive art/culture blogs out there (or blog lists) that aren’t included, in either their list or ours, and we will add them to the directory.

Happy blogging,

Fantastic new art blog additions

Hello everyone,

It’s not only the ‘in-flight and travel magazines’ section of our directory that has seen an improvement of late. The blogs category is now bursting with new internet talent, especially in the performing arts field. One set of useful contacts are the Guardian blogs, both in music and theatre. Updated daily by a range of quick, witty journalists, the blogs report topical news and behind the scenes gossip as well as critical reviews. Usually accompanied by high res photos, the Guardian blogs are the go-to source for up to the minute performing arts news.

We’re also making a real effort to expand the US side of the directory and have discovered some fantastic art blogs from those talented folk across the pond. Bill Donovan’s blogs are definitely worth a visit. The NYC arts professor contributes to two sites -Ink Stained Hands and Beautiful Decay – both of which concentrate on helping emerging artists into the spotlight. See the news feed at www.artsmediacontacts.com for more information on US art blogs.

Best wishes,

We’ve been very busy at arts media contacts recently, adding lots of new and exciting contacts to the directory. Summer holidays may seem a little way off, (especially with all this wet and windy weather!) but now is the time to get in touch with our new contacts in the in-flight magazine and cruise ship category. With millions of passengers flying and sailing to their holiday destinations over the summer months, they need some quality reading material to pass the boring travel time. Most in-flight publications feature upcoming events and many have specific editorial arts and culture sections. By advertising in these glossy mags, you’re reaching a huge captive audience in one swoop, so make sure you check out our new listings today!

Best wishes,

Sian Disson
